Try cross-selling other magazine titles in your bills. Meredith has had success sending acknowledgments to people who paid with their order, by offering a great deal for another title.  Do this on both mailed and e-mailed bills.

From the MMPA Summit:  Liz Bredeson at  Meredith said they offer the flap on a bangtail envelope in bills and renewals to an advertiser.  Covers the costs of the BRE, hasn’t hurt response.  Liz suggests offers that don’t compete with magazine content.  Flap carries a “Special offer for [Magazine] Customers” slug.

If you use the ubiquitous “statement of benefits” for your direct mail packages, take a cue from Entertainment Weekly, who has the line “Movie Screening Division” in their return address on the outer envelope. Can your magazine offer something similar, like “Recipe Test Kitchen” or “Golf Product Testing Division” that ties to your editorial speciality?
